The VIN (Vehicle Identification Number), also called the chassis number, is a unique 17-character code assigned to every car produced in the world. For Porsche, this code follows a precise logic that reveals the origin, model, engine, production year and place of manufacture.
Here is the complete structure, position by position:
Positions 1 to 3: the manufacturer code (WMI)
The first three characters form the World Manufacturer Identifier (WMI). For Porsche, two prefixes exist:
- WP0: identifies a Porsche built in Germany. This is the prefix of the vast majority of models: 911, Boxster, Cayman, 718, as well as the historic models (924, 928, 944, 968).
- WP1: used for Porsche SUVs (Cayenne and Macan), which are also produced in Germany but identified with a distinct WMI code because of their vehicle category.
If the VIN does not start with WP0 or WP1, you are not looking at a Porsche. This is the first and most obvious basic check.
Positions 4 to 6: filler characters or model code
This is where the distinction between the European and North American markets comes into play:
- ZZZ (European / Rest of World market): these three letters are filler characters required by the European standard. They carry no specific information but indicate that the vehicle was built for the European market.
- Specific model code (North American market): on US/Canada VINs, these positions contain information about the vehicle type, restraint system and exact model, as required by the NHTSA.
Position 7: body type
The seventh character indicates the model family and, combined with position 8, identifies the exact body type. For European VINs (WP0ZZZ…), this position corresponds to the first digit of Porsche’s internal type code:
- 9: 911 (all generations)
- 9: also used for the Boxster and Cayman (the full code with position 8 differentiates them)
Position 8: engine type / sub-model
The eighth character refines the identification by specifying the generation and engine. Combined with position 7, it forms a two-digit code that identifies the internal Porsche type.
Position 9: check digit
This character is a verification digit calculated from the other 16 characters of the VIN using a mathematical algorithm (weighting then modulo 11). It detects typing errors and forged VINs. If the check digit does not match the expected calculation, the VIN is invalid or has been altered.
Note: the letters I, O and Q are forbidden in any VIN, to avoid confusion with the digits 1, 0 and 9.
Position 10: model year
A single character encodes the production year. Porsche uses the international standard code:

Warning: the cycle repeats every 30 years. A « V » can therefore mean 1997 or 1967. The context (model, generation) removes the ambiguity.
Position 11: factory of manufacture
This character reveals the production site:
- S: Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen, the historic home of Porsche, where the 911, 718 Cayman and 718 Boxster are assembled.
- L: Leipzig, the modern plant opened in 2002, dedicated to the Cayenne, Macan and Panamera, as well as certain special series.
- N: Neckarsulm, an Audi/VW site used for certain specific production runs.
- U: Uusikaupunki (Finland), the Valmet Automotive plant, which produced some Boxsters and Caymans under contract.
The factory is often overlooked, but purists care about it. A 911 built in Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen is considered more « authentic » by collectors.
Positions 12 to 17: serial number
The last six characters form the sequential serial number. Combined with position 12 (which can also serve as a sub-model identifier on European VINs), it identifies each vehicle individually. This number is useful for cross-checking against the registration document and the service book.

For more recent models (Cayenne, Macan, Panamera, Taycan), the VIN codes follow a slightly different logic with the WP1 prefix for SUVs. Reading them remains similar, but positions 7-8 identify sub-families specific to these ranges.
